The proliferation of high deductible health plans has resulted in lost revenue when patients avoid care and when they are unable and/or unwilling to pay current patient liabilities. We know that 64% of the patients with high deductible commercial plans have been avoiding necessary care, and that patient liabilities have increased to be 12 to 20% of total patient service revenue, leading to unreimbursed care averaging 6.6% of revenue due to patients’ inability and/or unwillingness to pay unanticipated expenses.
